Dario Amodei on January 2026 said that software engineers are very closed to be replaced, for a statement of that manner coming from a person building systems that are actively making engineers more and more distant from the product and code was a bomb for the publishers as soon as it left his mouth.
After 8 months, i think Amodei's premise was right, but his conclusion was a little wrong, its not the engineers themselves, but the definition of a software engineer that is evolving rapidly. LLMs can execute easily what 95% of engineers could do given it has clear instructions for complex systems, for the other 5 consists of creative ingenuity on how a system can scale or how it can even move forward.
All LLMs work on probabilities and tend to come back to the same four outcomes on how it wants to build a particular thing which you, the reader would also have observed.
So where do we stand now?
Returning to what humans do best, recognising patterns, being creative because that's one thing the models can not inherently have with no fault of their own, they measure intelligence on the scale of IQ but the real intelligence has always been the capability to make art, imagine art and read art.
